ASCS Non Wing Warriors Wage Battle on the Best in the Southwest
Tucson, Arizona (March 10th, 2009) – The winged forces of the American Sprint Car Association, Southwest Region, are ready as the Phoenix based ASCS Canyon Region drivers invade from the north. The Battle is set as the series fires to life for the first time in 2009 this Saturday night at Tucson's USA Raceway.
Reigning series champion, Rick
Ziehl, will have a stout cast of characters to contend with as drivers from
four states congregate in Tucson for what will be an ultimate battle of wing
sprint cars.
Joining the ASCS Southwest Region winged ranks on Saturday's card will be
Charles Davis Jr. and Mike Martin, both of whom will likely contend for the
series title while also vying for the non-wing Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon
Region championship. There are no conflicting dates between the two
Arizona-based Regional series.
"Chargin' Charles" Davis, wheeling a car fielded by Orielly Chevrolet’s
“Smoken” Joe Morales, will be on point for the upcoming battle. Davis has
ranked second in ASCS Canyon points over each of the past two seasons. Martin,
joined by former Arizona sprint car champion Josh Pelkey, will unite forces
with Davis to bring down the Southwest combatants.
No stranger to Tucson's winged
Sprint Car circles, Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces added last year's inaugural ASCS
Southwest Region championship to several previous titles including the top
position at USA Raceway in 2007.
Ziehl will be one of at least two reigning ASCS champions in competition on
Saturday night, as defending ASCS Rocky Mountain Region champion Derrik Ortega
is scheduled to be on hand. The Albuquerque shoe took last year's Rocky
Mountain title at just 17 years of age to become the youngest champion in ASCS
history.
World of Outlaw Veteran and 2008 Roger McCluskey Classic Winner, Johnny "Hollywood" Herrera, will make the journey from Albuquerque to Tucson prior to heading north to Knoxville, Iowa. Herrera, who was hired to drive for Larry and Lori Woodward, will contend for the 2009 Knoxville Track Championship and attend several IRA events as well as competing in a number of the most prestigious 410 races in the United States of America.
The super fast ASCS sprint cars will open their 2009 season along with Super Stocks, Factory Stocks and Hornets. General admission tickets will go on sale at 5pm for only $12, racing will begin promptly at 7pm.
Season Passes are on sale for only $199 and $149 for Seniors, Students and Military. Suite Access Passes which allow race fans the opportunity to enjoy the races from USA Raceway’s VIP Suite are also on sale for only $349.
