Levi Jones of Brownsburg, IN, a former USAC Sprint Car Champion, Jesse Hockett of Warsaw, MO and Darren Hagen of Riverside, CA earned pole positions for Saturday night’s Sands Chevrolet Copper on Dirt feature races by winning their Copper Bowl Shootouts Friday night. Jones drove the Tony Stewart midget to the win in the USAC National Midget race on Manzanita Speedway’s half mile track. Jones was the fourth quickest in qualifying behind Chad Boat, Brad Sweet and Josh Wise. Behind Jones were Bryon Clauson, Brad Sweet, Josh Wise, Nathan High, Josh Ford, Kevin Swindell, Boat, Brady Bacon and Hagen. (February 21) The Sands Chevrolet Copper on Dirt dealt Manzanita Speedway a good poker hand as the Southwest Phoenix track had a full house for the finals Saturday night
The packed grandstands as well as the crowded pits were treated to 115 laps of main event action plus another 56 laps for the preliminary races for the USAC Sprint Cars and USAC Midgets.
Local driver Chad Boat won the "C" main for the Sprints and the "B" features were won by Chris Windom and Tracy Hines. Darren Hansen won the 1st "B" for the midgets and JJ Yeley took the second "B".
The Midgets then took to the half mile track for main event action with Levi Jones and Bryan Clauson sharing the front row and USAC driver of the year Jerry Coons, Jr. at the rear of the 27 car field.
The battle for the lead was overshadowed as the fans attention was on Coons, the local favorite. While Jones was holding off the field up front Coons was picking off cars using both the high groove and the bottom of the track and with the help of a couple of yellow flags he drove his way toward the front.
Jones had a spin and dropped to tenth. That gave the lead to Brad Sweet who was followed by Arizona drivers Nathan High, Coons and Chad Boat.
The USAC sprint car 40 lap feature had Darren Hagen, winner of the Friday night Copper Bowl Shoot-out, in the front row and they maintained the top two positions for the entire distance but handled the lead like a hot potato and there were numerous lead changes. At the checkered flag it was Hagen, who won the midget feature in 2008, claiming the victory. Swindell was greeted with a chorus of booing as the crowd felt the he had taken out Coons when they were battling for second. Dave Darland was a close third ahead of Cole Whitt and Jesse Hockett.
It was another battle between the front row starters in the K&N Silver Crown 50 lap feature. Hockett started on the pole with two time champion Bud Kaeding on the outside. Kaeding led the most laps but ran second to Hockett for part of the race before sealing the win. The Tony Stewart Motorsports cars driven by Levi Jones and Tracy Hines finished third and fourth. Coons ran third until the closing laps when he slowed and finished ninth.

Brad Sweet took the Main Event on Saturday

Jon Staborough had his troubles when he and his car caught on fire during the Main Event while fueling on a red.

John got back in the car after the fire was put out, and finished the Main with a respectable 6th place.

The true local favorite, Nathan High was a force to be reckoned with all weekend. Qualifying 14th among the Nation's finest, Nathan would go on to beat out Levi Jones to win his heat. Then starting in the Fifth spot, he would give the lead car of Brad Sweet's a run for his paycheck before settling for the Second spot. We didn't here much about Nathan after it was all said and done, but he deserves some credit for a great run.
