Due to scheduling problems Manzanita Speedway will be dark this Saturday night but a full card of racing featuring dirt modifieds, modlites and dwarf cars are on Friday night’s program.
The schedule had late model stocks running on the half mile track Saturday night with the dwarf cars providing the support show. However the race was scrubbed when Manzy’s General Manager was unable to contact anyone from the late models in time to confirm the race. This still leaves open the possibility of seeing the late models before the year is over. At the present time they are scheduled to run on the short track June 28.
Although he finished third behind Jason Noll and Chuck Kuehl in last week’s half mile track dirt modified feature, Anthony Madrid still has a 14 point lead but has a different driver in pursuit. Tony Steele took over second when Jay Foster had a second straight night with hard luck dropping him in the standings.
Former champion Jason Noll got his first win of the year and is now ranked third in points.
Robert King, Jr. increased his points lead over his team mate, Clayton Echols, with his second win in the Arizona Modlites and will possibly pull double duty with a ride in the Jay Parvin dirt modified. He finished seventh last week in the car.
The Belcher family will be hoping for better things Friday night. Terry Belcher was the first car out of the dirt modified feature and Terry Belcher, Jr., after running away from the field, was the next out after leading for five laps. Terry, Sr. also was disappointed with his third place finish in the modlites when he was edged at the finish line by Clayton Echols.
JJ LeMoine is the pre race favorite in the Desert Dwarf Cars after winning a second straight feature, his third overall win of the season. His team mate Taylor Cuzick dropped out early last week but expects to be near the front Friday night. Cuzick has won a feature this year and was a two time winner last year.
Steve Davis and Randy Johnson had strong runs last week with second and third place finishes and could pull off a win this week.
The first green flag is slated to fly at 7:30 P.M.
The American Sprint Car Series will be running their longest race ever when they return May 24 for the running of the 51 lap Wayne Weiler Memorial Salute to the Indy 500. The number of laps reflect the most popular car number that was on cars owned by Weiler, a two time competitor at the Indy 500. For the first time in a number of years Jeremy Sherman may be looking over his shoulder after Charles Davis, Jr. cut into his points lead by winning last week’s feature at Central Arizona Raceway. Davis cut 16 points off Sherman’s lead when a blown tire sent Sherman to the pits in the closing laps and he finished 8th. Davis is now only 22 points behind the three time defending champion.
The Weiler race is sponsored by Arizona Race Mart and is expected to be the richest outing of the year for the sprints.
