Southwest Open Wheel Championships Added to the National Midget Driver of the Year Schedule

November 27th and 28th at Canyon Speedway may end up to be an event marked on the calender of many national contenders among the ranks of USAC, Badger, and other sanctioning bodys. Doug Gabbard director of Operations announced Yesterday that the Prestigious National Midget Driver of the Year award has added the Southwest Championships to its schedule. Gapinski Racing Enterprises founded the National Midget Driver of the Year Award in 1999 to bring recognition to the midget racing community, and those in it’s ranks that meet certain career milestones. The organization also has rewards for Rookie of the Year, Best Engine Builder, and Best Chassis Manufacturer. With past driver award winners like Brad Loyett, Jerry Coons Jr. Bobby East, Brad Sweet and others, there is a good possibility that the entries for the November 27th and 28th event will show some of these top names.

One week previous to the Southwest Championship is Turkey Night at Irwindale Speedway in California, only a half days drive from Canyon Speedway in Peoria Arizona. It is very likely many of the USAC National teams will be among the entrants. "We would like to make this a yearly event that draws the bigger names in racing." Gabbard commented.

We can only speculate at this point what this newfound development will mean for the Southwest Championships at Canyon, but with the date being what it is, and the purse continuing to grow, and now the event being added to the points chase for this award, it all adds up to a great show for racers and fans. Be sure to mark your calender. No doubt more Racing teams will be!
