Sussex Takes the Win in the Canyon Speedway ASCA Final Battle

We were really surprised that the turnout was not better considering the great weather and the way the track stayed all night. With only a field 14 cars making the roster for the evening, It would prove to be a night that any would have been sorry to miss. The racing was close and fast, and the fans got a show that they will not soon forget. With a 16 car minimum to win the $1000.00 prize money for the Main Event, the ASCA paid it anyway. It was investment well worth the cost as every fan that showed up to watch the final ASCA Battle got to watch one of the closest action packed finishes of the year. Chargin’ Charles Davis Jr. Made the roll call in the Michael Bryant owned DRC, and Matt Rossi would also make the trip to CSP to participate.

Another battle waiting to be settled would be the close race for the ASCA 2009 Championship. With the top three teams going into the nights competition with only 14 points to separate them, it would play out for some real action during the night. Every point, every position would be a determining factor who would be crowned Champion.

Every entry was in the final show for the main event lineup with The “Hoss” Brian Hosford lining up for the pole position. Outside Hossford would be The defending points leader Zack Sawyers. The second row, Sussex and then outside Sussex would be the Shoe  tied for second in points of Mike Colegrove. Third row Nicki Aiuto and outside Nathan High in the ABC entry. Fourth row Williams and Rossi, Fifth row Buckman and Chargin’ Charles Davis. Any fan can tell you that with a line-up like that, the deck was stacked in action’s favor!

When the green dropped the action commenced right away. On the back stretch positions were changing every second. Meanwhile, Sawyers was stretching his lead. Not for long as Sussex, Colegrove and High would all battle for the third spot. Fans went to their feet while the top spots dualed it out three wide for lap after lap. Sawyers would spin bringing out the yellow and putting him to the back. At the cone, Sussex went to afterburners on the cushion blowing by Colegrove to take the lead with High working the bottom and top groves through traffic. Sawyers went to work right away, picking off the field to work his way back to the front runners. The young points leader was not going to lose this championship without a fight. He would bring the triple x car back up to the 5th spot before he would run out of laps. Gabbard finished fourth after starting in the sixth row securing his title victory. Colegrove took the checker for third. Nathan High crossed the line in second from the sisxth spot. Sussex drove one of the best races of the season for the Foster team to win the last Main Event of 2009 for ASCA.
