Pictures and Results for the Fontana Midgets at USA Raceway
Last weekend was a classic example of the determination that Arizona Midget racers have for their sport. With all of the upset among the ranks of the AMRA, and the loss of Manzy, coupled with the economy, many teams have wondered about the fate of Midgets in Arizona.
With the help of Kevin Montgomery of USA Raceway, Joe Fontana of Fontana Automotive, and a few other corporate sponsors that stepped up to help, the Midget racers put on a spectacular show for the crowd. "It just shows what racers are willing to do." said Rick Shuman, Vice President of the local AMRA. Arizona has struggled in the past couple of years to keep the long legacy of midget racing in the Grand Canyon State. Among those that have raced midgets in Arizona over the years, all eyes were on Kevin Montgomery to see how this week's event would be supported. Would Joe Fontana and Kevin Montgomery be able to give Midget racing a leg up? Many wanted to come, but with the uncertain times ahead for midgets, some were just simply not prepared to take their equipment out of moth balls and make them race ready. Others, like the Higgins Family planned to go, but with Brendan taking a spill in Prescott that left him with injuries that needed to mend, they opted to stay home. Some were excited about the Open Comp format, and expressed their desire to get back into Midget Racing in the near future if this arrangement continues. Others were somewhat skeptical due to the tumultuous state of the local midget club. All bets were in, and all questions answered when USA Raceway showed a proud field of Mighty Midgets that kept the crowds on the edge of their seats all evening!
Gaye asked that I relay her apologies for the poor quality of the pictures. We are having a lot of difficulties in the picture department lately, and hope to get them resolved soon.
