The field for Manzanita Speedway’s NAPA/Budweiser/Parker Store Western World Championships has added another big name to its list of entries. The news that JJ Yeley would not be running this weekend has proved to be wrong as the NASCAR veteran filed a late entry Tuesday evening and will be running on Manzanaita’s half mile track Friday and Saturday night. Yeley has not ruled out running another car in the 360 cubic inch sprinters but has not yet entered their event which gets underway tonight with their races being staged on the one third mile oval.
Yeley will be driving a sprinter that he and his dad "Cactus" Jack Yeley own and JJ will almost guarantee to provide some of the fireworks. He has never won the Western but has had one of the best showings ever in the history of the event. In 2001 Yeley broke in the Friday night qualifying main and had to start near the back of the field in the Saturday night consolation race. He won the 15 lap race and that put him in the eighth row for the 20 lap semi. His drive from deep in the field overshadowed the race up front as he took the checkered flag in third. That placed him in the 10th row in the 40 lap championship race. He put on another great drive and finished fourth.
Although he has not raced at Manzanita the past few years he still holds records for ten laps and for 30 laps. He set those records in January of 1998. After winning the first three races at Manzy he went to Indy and finished ninth in the "500".
Yeley is only the second driver to win the USAC triple crown-sprint, midget and silver crown-in the same year. He shares that honor with Tony Stewart.
Yeley, who was fired after 21 NASCAR races this year, has several options open for NASCAR next year and there is some interest from several teams after the drivers who drove his car fared much worse than did JJ. JJ finished fifth in the Busch Series in 2006 but his contract was not renewed. He finished
The 360 race tonight is scheduled to begin competitive racing at 7:00 P.M. They will join with the USAC sprints Friday night and will be part of the championship races Saturday night.
